Review

The Baby Lock Eclipse SX model is the precursor to the DX, the first model featuring Jet Air Threading. This model might not include all the bells and whistles of later models, but it offers the quality of a Baby Lock serger at a far more reasonable price. In addition to an adjustable differential feed, the SX includes an easy, push-button threading system, adjustable tension controls and a multi-purpose presser foot. It’s an excellent choice for beginners and experienced serger users. Besides, who can argue with a serger that uses size 130/75H household sewing needles?

Stitch Options

In addition to its built-in rolled hem feature which can be adjusted between 0 mm and 2 mm, the Baby Lock Eclipse SX includes an adjustable stitch width of 1.5 mm to 7.5 mm and a stitch width of between 0 mm and 4 mm. Stitch options include 2- and 3-thread rolled hem stitches, wide and narrow flatlock and blind hem stitches in addition to the 2-, 3- and 4-thread overlock stitches.

Product Features

 Easy Glide Threading System

While this machine is threaded manually, the unique threading system makes the process far easier than other sergers. Simply insert each thread into the tubular looper system and pull it through. There are no confusing thread guides to follow and no special tools to use.

Full Featured Differential Feed

This model includes an advanced differential feed system that can easily be adjusted from a 2 to 1 ratio for gathering fabrics to a 3 to 4 ratio to ensure smooth, perfectly flat stitches. This function allows you to produce consistently flat, perfectly formed stitches, or even gathers and delicate lettuce-edge finishes on sheer and lightweight fabrics.

Encased Looper System

The Baby Lock Eclipse SX includes a tubular looper system that protects the threads as they move through the serger while preventing threading errors. This system is especially helpful when using delicate or decorative threads. Threading this serger is as easy as inserting each looper thread into a threading port and pulling it through the looper. The machine includes a comprehensive threading guide inside the looper cover for easy reference.

Twin-Cam Tensioning

The innovative tension system features a twin-cam micromatic component that prevents thread tangling while delivering the proper tension for all types of fabrics and threads. The owner’s manual includes comprehensive, easy-to-follow tension adjustment settings for every stitch option.

Warranties

The Baby Lock Eclipse SX includes a 25-year limited warranty on the machine, a 10-year warranty on parts, a 5-year warranty on electrical components and a one-year labor warranty.

Verdict

For a manual serger, the Baby Lock Eclipse SX offers owners an impressive array of features. It handles a variety of fabrics with ease and the stitching is consistently even and secure, even when operated at its top speed of 1,500 stitches per minute. The owner’s manual and instructional DVD both include comprehensive, step-by-step instructions and the tubular looper system makes threading far less time consuming. This might be an older entry-level model, but this lightweight little machine clearly reflects the quality and dependability associated with Baby Lock products.
