Review (4.6 Stars)

The Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger excels above many other machines in the Designio series, as well as similarly priced models by other manufacturers. It offers plenty of impressive features for a reasonably priced serger. There are plenty of built-in stitch options and the adjustable differential feed ensures perfect ruffles or smooth stitches, even on very stretchy fabrics.

Stitch Options

The Brother Designio Series DZ1234 features a 3-4 thread capability with 22 built-in sewing stitches. Included in the stitch options are both 3- and 4-thread overlock stitches, narrow hem, rolled hem, and a ribbon lock stitch. The ability to adjust the stitch settings allows you to customize the stitch to your exact project needs.

Product Features

Adjustable Differential Feed Ratio
The Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger features an adjustable differential feed that allows the machine to sew various fabrics whether delicate or thick. An adjustable differential feed controls the ratio of movement between the front and back feed dogs, which will help feed the fabric smoothly beneath the needles.

Being able to choose the settings for the differential feed makes all the difference when producing gathers or ruffles as you operate the machine. You can instantly adjust the speed of either feed dog beneath the presser foot by pressing a lever on the side of the serger. In addition to creating perfect gathers, this option allows you to prevent puckering on sheer or lightweight fabrics as they move beneath the needles.

Stitch Width Control
The stitch width can be adjusted from 3 to 7 millimeters, allowing you to customize the stitch to your project. Being able to adjust the stitch width is vital for producing perfectly flat stitches, especially when working on delicate or sheer fabrics.

Color-Coded Threading
The serger is color-coded to make threading a breeze, regardless of the thread types. An easy-to-follow color-coded guide is provided on the front of the machine for the needles as well as the upper and lower looper threading. The system makes learning to thread the serger a far less complicated experience.

Interchangeable Feet
The DZ1234 has three interchangeable feet: a gathering foot, a piping foot, and a blind hem stitch foot. The gathering foot gathers one length of fabric while simultaneously connecting it to a flat fabric and finishing the edges. The piping foot guides narrow, facilitating installation and also holds zippers in. The blind hem stitch guides the fabric under the foot to create a practically invisible blind hem.

Free Arm
This Brother model offers you the options of working on a flatbed surface or making an easy change to a free arm work area. The free arm makes it easier to sew sleeves, collars, pant legs, and small children’s items. Simply remove the flatbed extension when you wish to put a clean, professional finish on typically hard to reach pieces.

Needles
The DZ1234 uses the same standard needles used in sewing machines. This is convenient for the user, and makes shopping for needles easier.

Warranties

The DZ1234 is covered by Brother’s standard limited warranty. The warranty period is 1 year from the original purchase date and covers the machine and included accessories. The printed circuit boards are covered for 5 years from the original purchase date, and the chassis unit is covered by warranty for 25 years from the original purchase date.

Verdict

The Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger is one of the best machines available in the series. It offers the user a number of features and accessories at a very reasonable cost. The color-coded threading feature makes it easy to learn and its powerful motor provides up to 1,300 stitches per minute. The 22 built-in stitch options produce even, flat stitches and the three included presser feet make producing specialty stitches a snap.

No matter what your skill level, this Brother serger offers you some of the best features available in any comparable serger.

About Amanda S.: Growing up, I was fascinated by watching my mom and grandma turn fabric into beautiful handcrafted items. In my early 20’s, I finally got brave, buying a sewing machine and teaching myself to sew. As I fell in love with sewing, my machine collection expanded, and I ran an Etsy shop sewing children’s clothing for a few years. As a single mom of 3 great kids, my sewing time has lessened, but I still try to find time to work on quilts, bags, and projects with my kids, teaching them what I love.
