Review

This Toyota SL-1T model is the first in this series. It includes all the basic features you’d expect on an entry-level serger but the price is suited to a more advanced class of machine. It performs beautifully and isn’t hard to thread or use, and the construction is solid. The instruction manual is comprehensive and includes in-depth threading pointers and stitch options.

Stitch Options

In addition to 3- and 4-thread overlock and flatlock stitches, this serger offers you the options of choosing 3-thread standard and narrow rolled hem stitches, a 4-thread safety stitch, and the capability of creating blind hems, working with cording, piping, and elastic by using optional presser feet. The stitch lengths can be adjusted between 1 mm and 5 mm and stitch widths are adjustable from 1 mm to 6.5 mm.

Speed: 1,300 stitches per minute

Product Features

Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure Control

Being able to adjust the amount of pressure the presser foot puts on the fabric as it moves under the needles gives you better control over any type of fabric you use. The presser foot pressure can be easily changed to handle the sheerest or very thick fabrics with the turn of a screw located on the top of the machine.

Adjustable Differential Feed

The differential feed controls how fast the fabric moves underneath the needles while you’re sewing, so having the option to make minor or major adjustments to the speed of the feed dogs holding the fabric gives you complete control over your work. Whether you’re stitching seams on very stretchy knits, gathering woolen blends for pleats, or putting a beautiful lettuce edge on sheer sleeves, setting the differential feed to the proper speed will ensure professional results.

Easy-to-Reach Controls

All the controls on the Toyota SL-1T are within easy reach and are clearly marked. The tension dials for the needles and loopers are on the front of the machine and the front looper cover opens to reveal a handy, color-coded threading diagram for fast, easy reference. The bright, built-in light shines directly on the presser foot for maximum visibility.

Adjustable Cutting Width

The upper cutting blade is safely located directly above the needle plate and is easily retracted. All it takes is moving it to its lowest position by turning the hand wheel towards you. The cutting width can be adjusted between 4 mm and 6 mm by adjusting the screw for the upper blade.

Warranties

The Toyota SL-1T includes a limited 5-year warranty on the machine head, a 2-year limited warranty on the mechanical parts and electrical components and a 90-day limited warranty on repairs or parts replacements.

Verdict

The Toyota SL-1T is one of the first home sergers manufactured by this company. The all-metal construction is solid enough to ensure little vibration, even when operated at high speed. The machine is relatively easy to learn to thread and produces nice, even stitches on fine and heavy fabrics. While this is a basic model, the price is on par with more advanced machines. However, Toyota builds their equipment to last, so if you’re in the market for a solid workhorse, this might be worth a look.
