Review
If you’re interested in a basic, manual serger for a first-time user, this little machine might be of interest. The Costway Serger is constructed of aluminum and plastic, which accounts for the lightweight price, but it does include a few handy features, including an automatic tension system, a free arm option and bright LED lighting. Reviews are mixed on this model, but there are few complaints about the quality of the stitching.
Stitch Options
With a top speed of 1,200 stitches per minute, this isn’t the fastest serger on the market, but the 2-3-4 stitch options are on par with more advanced machines. In addition to the three overlock stitch options, you can choose from 4 built-in rolled hem options, flat stitches, picot edging stitches and even cover stitch options. The stitch width is adjustable between 3.5 mm and 5.0 mm. Stitch length can be easily adjusted by simply turning a dial on the right side of the machine.

Product Features
Self-Adjusting Tension System
This Costway Serger includes a self-adjusting tension system that includes a comprehensive stitch chart. A dial located on the right side of the machine allows you to choose the stitch you wish to use. When you make your stitch selection the tension system automatically adjusts to the proper setting for that stitch.
Adjustable Differential Feed
An adjustable differential feed is a must-have feature on any serger. This feature allows you to better control the fabric as it moves beneath the needles. When properly set, the differential feed prevents puckers and pulls in knits and lightweight fabrics. The feed dogs also give you better control over heavy fabrics or multiple layers and ensures evenly spaced gathers and ruffles. The differential feed can be adjusted between 0.7 mm and 2 mm.
Free Arm Feature
Unlike many entry-level sergers, this model includes a free arm option which allows you better access and control when putting a professional finish on shirt and pants cuffs, sleeves and other projects that might otherwise be difficult to complete. Removing part of the machine’s work area instantly converts into a free arm.
Wide Open Threading
Being able to completely open up the machine to expose the threading paths make needle and looper threading a breeze. Disengaging the front looper cover not only gives you an amazing amount of space in which to work, a comprehensive threading chart is printed inside the cover for easy reference.
Warranties
This Costway serger includes a very limited warranty of 90 days.

Verdict
Costway did not go all out on the construction materials when manufacturing this serger, but surprisingly did include a few features usually found on more expensive models. In addition to the many stitch options, it includes an automatic tension system, adjustable stitch width and length controls, and a color-coded threading chart. The top speed of 1,200 is more than acceptable for a sewist new to serging, and the free arm function is a pleasant and very handy surprise. If you can get past the cheap construction materials, the ease-of-use, low price and useful features make this serger a great choice for a beginner of any age.
