Review

This well-made, basic serger is an excellent choice for beginners or experts. Despite the limited stitch options, this machine is easy to thread and use, with an easy threading system to help the user guide threads into the proper position. The sturdy construction will guarantee years of use and the stitches are invariably smooth and even. The ability to adjust almost every function on the 634D makes this a versatile, albeit expensive, serger. The Janome MyLock 634D is a high-performance serger created to make the user’s experience as easy as possible.

Stitch Options

The Janome MyLock 634D serger features 2-, 3- or 4-thread overlock stitches, 3- or 4-thread overedge stitches, a narrow hem stitch, a picot edge stitch and a 2-thread rolled hem stitch. It also offers an adjustable differential feed ranging from a .05 to 2.25 ratio. The differential feed offers increased control and handling of more difficult fabrics. It features a lower looper pre-tension stitch that eliminates the need to change tension with rolled hems. The machine also allows you to switch to a rolled hem stitch without changing the needle plate. The stitch length is adjustable between 1 mm and 5 mm. The presser foot can be raised extra high to accommodate thick fabrics and multiple layers.

Product Features

Lay-In Threading System

The unique lay-in threading system and comprehensive color-coded threading guide inside the front looper door ensures a quick and easy threading process. A lever inside the looper door releases the lower looper, giving you better access. Threading is as easy as placing the thread in the guide and flipping a switch. Turning the balance wheel snaps the looper back into position. When the machine is threaded, lifting the presser foot releases the thread tension, allowing you to easily draw the thread through the machine.

Easy-to-Reach Controls

There are no unwelcome surprises when it comes to locating all the controls on the Janome MyLock 634D. The dials controlling the differential feed and stitch length are on the right above the power switch and balance wheel. Beneath each lay-in tension dial is a convenient illustration of how the threads will appear when at the proper setting.

Adjustable Differential Feed

Being able to adjust the differential feed helps prevent fabric bunching or over-stretching delicate fabrics while also allowing you to create beautiful ruffles, lettuce edges, and even gathers. The ability to adjust the feed ratio from .05 mm to 2.25 mm gives you complete control over a wide range of fabrics.

Adjustable Thread Cutters

In addition to being able to adjust the cutting width between 2 mm and 5.7 mm, both the upper and lower knives can be easily disengaged. The 634D’s upper knife can be deactivated with the quick turn of a dial located inside the front right door of the serger and the lower knife can be disengaged by pushing a lever inside the left front of the machine. Being able to do this allows you to easily create decorative pieces that don’t require trimming while sewing.

High Presser Foot Lifter

An extra high presser foot lifter is built in to the machine to offer a higher clearance. This increased height allows the user to place bundled layers of fabric or more material in general under the presser foot.

Thread Variety

The Janome MyLock 634D supports 2, 3 and 4-thread overlocking stitches for maximum versatility in creating professional garments.

Warranties

The Janome MyLock 634D includes a 25-year warranty on mechanical parts, a 2-year warranty on electrical components and 1 year of coverage on labor.

Verdict

While the Janome MyLock 634D is limited on complex stitch options, it is more than capable of producing strong, even seams, creating charming ruffles, adding decorative borders, and finishing sheer garments or projects with fine rolled hems. The powerful motor produces an impressive 1,300 stitches per minute and the dual cutting knives can be adjusted to fit your seam allowance preferences. If your budget can manage the high price tag, Janome built this entry-level workhorse to last.
