Review

This little jewel of a serger might not be the latest model by Janome, but it’s well worth the low cost. In addition to being a sturdy workhorse of a machine, the Janome construction guarantees high-end performance. This would make an excellent entry-level machine for any sewist who wants to try her or his hand at serging without making a huge initial investment. Even if you’re new to serging, learning to thread and use this machine is a breeze.

Stitch Options

In addition to 3- and 4-thread overlock and 3-thread flatlock stitch options, the Janome 3434D also produces beautifully even rolled and narrow hem stitches and delicate picot edge stitches that add delicacy to lettuce edges. With these options, you can easily produce perfect rolled hems on even the sheerest fabrics. The stitch lengths are adjustable between 1 mm and 4 mm.

Product Features

Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure Control

Adjusting the foot pressure according to the type of fabric you want to use will give you the optimum amount of control over very sheer or thick fabrics. All it takes is making slight adjustments to a screw located on top of the machine. Making such adjustments also gives you better control when operating the machine at high speed.

Adjustable Differential Feed

Being able to adjust the feed dogs that move the fabric beneath the needles allows you to have complete control over any type of fabric. This feature is invaluable when you wish to gather fabric or when working with very stretchy knits. It not only produces perfectly even gathers, a properly adjusted differential feed helps eliminate the chance of fabric puckering or bunching when moving through the machine. The differential feed can be adjusted between 0.5 mm to 2.2 mm by simply turning a dial on the side of the serger.

Easy-to-Reach Controls

The tension dials for both needles and the upper and lower loopers are conveniently located on the front of the machine. It’s never been easier to set the correct tensions for whatever type of fabric you’re working on. The hand wheel, the stitch length control dial, and differential feed adjustment dial are all within easy reach on the right side of the upper housing.

Retractable Upper Knife

The 3434D offers you the convenience of being able to retract the upper cutting knife when you’re working on projects that don’t require edge trimming. Deactivating the blade is as easy as turning a release knob to disengage the blade, then locking it into the downward position by securing it to a pin. The cutting width on this model can be easily adjusted between 3.0 mm and 5.0 mm by turning an adjustment dial when the upper knife is retracted.

Warranties

The Janome 3434D includes a 5-year warranty on mechanical parts, a 2-year warranty on electrical components and a 1-year warranty on labor.

Verdict

This compact entry-level serger is free of all the bells and whistles, but it’s long on Janome quality and sturdiness. For a basic model, it’s not as frustrating as some sergers to thread and once you get it going, it’s a dream to operate. Finding the right tension settings can be some what tricky, but once you learn the quirks, this serger will produce flawless stitches. If you’re looking for a decently priced machine that will give you the best of the basics, take the time to try out one of these models.
