Review

Baby Lock Eclipse DX

This compact, portable serger is Baby Lock’s first model to feature the patented Jet Air threading system. Despite being classified as a basic model, it offers several of the features and functions found on more expensive Baby Lock models. The ease-of-use factor alone makes it a great serger choice for both beginners and expert sewists. Despite being somewhat noisy when operating at high speed, the Eclipse does not vibrate or shake during use, which ensures better control over both the fabric and stitches.

Stitch Options

In addition to a 4-thread overlock stitch with an integrated safety seam, the Eclipse produces 1 needle, 2- and 3-thread overlock, flat lock, and rolled hem stitches. Standard stitch widths include a left needle width of between 5 mm and 7.5 mm, a right needle width of 3 mm to 5.5 mm and a rolled hem stitch width of 3.5 mm. The standard stitch length can be adjusted between 1 mm and 4 mm and the rolled hem stitch length is between 0.75 mm and 4 mm.

Specifications

Speed: 1,500 stitches per minute

Product Features

Exclusive Jet Air Threading System

Threading a serger manually is often a time-consuming, frustrating process, but Baby Lock’s proprietary Jet Air threading system turns this difficult process into a one-touch function. Threading the Eclipse is as easy as pressing the threading lever. It instantly sends the threads smoothly through the looper tubes without the need to manually run it through any thread guides.

Adjustable Differential Feed

The easily adjustable differential feed will allow you to produce consistently flat, perfectly formed stitches or even gathers and delicate lettuce-edge finishes on sheer and lightweight fabrics. The unique single-unit feed dog component ensures a true 2 to 1 ratio on any type of fabric you use.

Fabric Support System

Baby Lock’s Eclipse DX includes an exclusive Fabric Support System to keep stitches balanced and smooth, no matter what type of fabric, stitch or speed you decide to use on your project. The system features built-in stitch fingers that move at the same speed as the knife blade. This function automatically keeps each seam perfectly even along the cutting width.

Tube-Encased Loopers

The Eclipse DX includes a tubular looper system that prevents the chance of making threading errors or having to deal with tangled threads. Being able to thread each tube in the order you choose is an additional bonus. Threading this serger is as easy as inserting each looper thread into a threading port and simply pressing a lever. The machine includes a comprehensive threading guide inside the looper cover for easy reference.

Warranties

The Baby Lock Eclipse DX includes a 25-year limited warranty on the machine, a 10-year warranty on parts, a 5-year warranty on electrical components and a one-year labor warranty.

Verdict

This lightweight entry-level home serger doesn’t include all the frills of more expensive machines, but it provides consistently high-grade stitches, even at its highest speed. It’s more than capable of handling very sheer or stretchy fabrics and heavyweights like denim, leather and woolens. From the state-of-the-art Jet Air threading system to its protective tubular loopers, the Baby Lock Eclipse DX is truly a superior serging machine that would make a great addition to anyone’s sewing room.
