Summer Projects To Make With Your Serger
Now that the weather has finally turned nice and the sun beckons us outside, it doesn’t mean you have to put away your serger for the season! Many great summer projects can be sewn up using your machine. From reusable bowl covers to a great little fabric teepee, we’ve put together some fun summer projects to make with your serger.
Reusable Fabric Bowl Cover
Summertime means picnics and barbecues, but it doesn’t mean you need to deal with pesky bugs in your food. Using two circles of fabric and some elastic, you can quickly whip up these reusable fabric bowl covers. Custom make them to fit small dishes, all the way up to large serving bowls to fit your outdoor dining needs.
Your serger quickly attaches elastic to projects, especially if your machine has a special elastic attachment foot. The serged seams won’t damage the elastic and allow it to maintain its full ability to stretch.
Mesh Beach Bag
Getting all your stuff to and from the beach or community pool is easy with this mesh beach bag! The mesh panels keep air moving through the bag, helping to dry out your towels and swimsuits and allow sand to fall out of the bottom.
Outdoor fabrics come in a wide range of solid colors and beautiful prints. They are a little heavier and stiffer than regular cotton to withstand the elements, making them great for a tote. Choose from a fun outdoor utility fabric and pair it with a coordinating mesh to create a one-of-a-kind bag.
BBQ Utility Apron
This barbeque utility apron not only keeps dad’s clothes clean while he’s running the grill, but it also has a handy towel loop for wiping his hands and a helpful utensil pocket. Everything the grill master may need is conveniently right at his fingertips.
To create an apron with more stiffness and structure, opt for a heavier fabric like denim or duck cloth. For a little extra flair, you can make the pockets out of a fun cotton print that matches his interests, such as his alma mater, favorite sports team, or hobby.
Gardening Apron
This gardening apron pattern creates an apron with pockets of varying sizes to hold your gardening tools, seed packets, and even gloves. It’s not only incredibly functional but is also pretty and stylish.
With plenty of fabric options to choose from, it’s easy to customize the gardening apron to your tastes. Make it out of durable fabric like denim or twill, or choose a beautiful print from your favorite fabric designer. You can even mix and match contrasting or complementary prints for a unique look. Just remember to choose fabrics that are easily washable as gardening is a dirty project!
Harvest Half Apron
The harvest half apron is another excellent project idea if you love gardening. A harvest apron is used to collect eggs from the chicken coop or produce from the garden, efficiently transporting your haul into the house. It can also pull double duty and keep your knees clean as you garden.
Sewing this harvest half apron with your serger creates sturdy, durable seams that won’t come apart when carrying heavy harvest loads. You can quickly sew this project using a vintage top sheet or yardage of your favorite cotton print.
Adult Wide Brim Sunhat
Whether you’re headed to the beach, working in the garden, or watching your kids play in the sprinklers, this wide brim sunhat will keep you cool and protected from the sun’s rays. When coupled with sunscreen, it’s a great way to keep the sun off your face, neck, and shoulders.
This sunhat comes together quickly and can be made in solid colors for a neutral piece that will coordinate with any outfit or make it in your favorite patterned fabrics. Or you can easily make both, so you have choices depending upon your mood.
Kids Reversible Bucket Hat
Adults aren’t the only ones who need protection from the sun! Keep your kids safe from the sun’s rays with one of these adorable bucket hats. This pattern is reversible, so they can choose two of their favorite fabrics instead of having to narrow it down to just one.
These bucket hats are great for playing at the park or splashing in the waves at the beach. The extra sun protection will keep their sweet skin from getting sunburnt and can be made to coordinate with their swimsuits or their favorite summer outfit. A bonus is the hat can roll up, making it easy to tuck into a beach bag or even your purse.
Reversible Tote Bag
Using less than two yards of fabric and a yard of fusible fleece, quickly sew up this reversible tote bag! It makes an excellent shopping bag for the summer farmer’s market, folding up nice and small, so it stows easily in your trunk or seat pocket. It’s also handy for library trips or carrying your water bottle and yoga mat when you’re headed to the yoga studio.
You can make this bag using coordinating fabric prints or go for a bold combination of animal prints and solids to create a unique tote bag. These bags are a great way to cut down on using disposable plastic bags and reducing your environmental footprint. Plus, they look much better!
Teepee
This fabric teepee is the perfect project if you’ve got kids in your life! It makes a great reading nook, can be used for campouts on the trampoline, or just a spot to get away from pesky siblings. When the kids are done playing with it, it’s easy to take it apart and pack it away until the next time.
Using only fabric and dowels (you could even use sticks from the backyard to give it a more rustic look), this project comes together in not much time at all. This tutorial even shows you how to quickly create fabric tubes after sewing the long ends together.

About Amanda S.: Growing up, I was fascinated by watching my mom and grandma turn fabric into beautiful handcrafted items. In my early 20’s, I finally got brave, buying a sewing machine and teaching myself to sew. As I fell in love with sewing, my machine collection expanded, and I ran an Etsy shop sewing children’s clothing for a few years. As a single mom of 3 great kids, my sewing time has lessened, but I still try to find time to work on quilts, bags, and projects with my kids, teaching them what I love.
