Review

This well-made portable by Singer is a good entry-level machine. Most of the features are manual, which is a plus when learning the basics of sewing machines. The stitch options are limited, but it does include a handy 4-step buttonholer. Beginners will face a learning curve when securing the vertical bobbin into place, setting the thread tension and handling the top speed of 750 stitches per minute, but the machine produces clean, secure stitches. On the plus side, a comprehensive threading diagram is available on the front of the machine.

Stitch Options

Stitch options on the Singer Start 1304 are limited to six, including straight, buttonhole, scallop, blind hem and satin stitches. The length and width of each stitch are pre-set, so there’s no guesswork involved. In addition, the presser foot can be raised higher than those on most other entry level sewing machines – a bonus when working on thicker fabrics or multiple layers. The stitch selection dial on the front of the machine illustrates every available option.

Product Features

4-Step Buttonholer

The buttonholer feature is a plus on any sewing machine. The adjustable buttonhole attachment makes it easy to create the perfect size buttonhole for any size button. Purchasing the optional button sewing foot makes the job even quicker by attaching buttons to your finished garments for you.

Automatic Tension Adjustment

This feature saves time and reduces guesswork by instantly adjusting the tension to the correct setting for each different stitch option you choose to use.

Free Arm Feature

On some sewing machines, it can be difficult to work on cuffs, smaller projects, collars and pant hems. The Singer Start 1304 takes all the frustration out of that with the removable free arm. This feature allows you easy access to areas that are usually difficult to reach or maneuver garments and other sewing projects.

Dual Spool Pins

The dual spool pins on this model allow you to quickly and easily sew parallel rows of stitches. This option adds additional security to hems, knit garments and some decorative projects that would otherwise require using an embroidery machine. If you opt to try out twin needle sewing, the twin needle attachment is an optional purchase.

Warranties

The Singer Start 1304 includes a 25-year limited warranty on manufacturer’s defects, a 5-year warranty on electrical components and a 1-year warranty on parts (light bulbs, belts) and machine adjustments. All labor costs are the responsibility of the machine owner.

Verdict

Durable Singer construction makes the 1304 Start a great sewing machine for beginners. It might be low on automatic features, but it’s built to last and there’s no guesswork with the pre-set stitch lengths and widths. While bobbin jams have been reported, this problem can be greatly reduced by maintaining control over the machine’s speed while winding the bobbin or when sewing. Threading is straightforward and the dual pins allow you to quickly start another row of stitches in a contrasting or complimentary color thread. This sturdy, reliable machine is a good choice for anyone starting out – especially if you’re on a shoestring budget.
