Review

Singer wasn’t messing around when designing this versatile sewing machine: it’s a true heavy-duty specimen. Its all metal construction adds stability and sturdiness. A more powerful motor drives the needle at up to 1,100 stitches per minute and the cost is reasonable, even for a mechanical model. It includes an acceptable range of utility and decorative stitches, including a 1-step buttonhole option. The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 sewing machine is a great investment for a beginner or a more experienced sewist who doesn’t need the automatic frills found on more expensive models.

Stitch Options

This Singer model includes 23 built-in stitch options, including 12 decorative stitches, 6 basic stitches, 4 stretch stitches and a 1-step automatic buttonhole stitch. The stitch width and length are both adjustable via their own control dials. Stitch width is adjustable from 0mm to 6mm and stitch length can be changed from 0.5mm to 4mm. The stitches and buttonholer are smooth, even, and secure, although it’s reported the backstitch tends to pucker thin fabrics such as satin.

Product Features

Built-in Needle Threader

This is a great time-saving feature for anyone who gets frustrated or has trouble when threading a needle. Once you guide the thread through the clearly labeled path on the machine, hit the mechanism and the needle instantly threads itself. No more squinting and far less grumbling!

Presser Foot Pressure Control

This option allows you to make a series of adjustments to the pressure put on the fabric by the presser foot. It gives you an extra measure of control over all fabric types. The presser foot can be raised higher than on other models, which gives you extra room when working on bulky fabrics or larger projects.

Singer Sewing Assistant App

This very helpful addition is invaluable to beginners and experienced sewists alike who may need help getting started sewing or choosing the right thread type for a specific project. This intuitive app can be accessed via your smartphone. Here are a few examples of the sewing topics the app covers: threading the machine, bobbin winding, basic sewing instructions, adjusting the presser foot pressure, changing stitch width and length and many more. Singer will also set you up with links to a wide range of helpful, step-by-step videos you can access on the Internet.

Free Arm Option

This is a great feature on any sewing machine. It saves you time and drastically cuts frustration when working on smaller, more intricate sewing projects or when finishing pants cuffs, sleeves, collars, and hemming infant and baby garments.

Warranties

The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 sewing machine includes a 25-year limited manufacturer’s warranty.

Verdict

Like most Singers, the 4423 is a well-built, all-purpose sewing machine that’s sophisticated enough for experienced users, yet uncomplicated enough for beginners. It easily handles a wide range of fabrics and sewing projects from lingerie to denim quilts to leather skirts. The powerful motor keeps the machine running smoothly through the thickest fabrics and never fails to produce beautiful stitches. This model might not include any of the bells and whistles found on other, more expensive Singer machines, but it’s a sturdy workhorse that’s built to last, it will do any job well, and the price is more than right.
