Futura XL-420 Sewing & Embroidery Machine
|
Review
This sewing/embroidery combo machine from Singer brings you the best of both worlds, including a one-step buttonhole function and the ability to work with multiple sizes of embroidery hoops. The features and functions included in this machine are nearly endless, all of which are reflected in the healthy price. The over-sized work area is brilliantly lit by 6 bright LED lights and the machine itself produces clean, even stitches. Some may consider it a downside to be connected to either a computer or laptop to operate it in embroidery mode but this gives you greater freedom when creating or editing designs and fonts.
Stitch Options
In addition to 200 built-in embroidery design options, 20 endless patterns and 5 popular fonts, the Singer Futura XL-420 offers a wealth of features usually found on high-end sewing machines. The 30 pre-loaded sewing stitches include 17 decorative stitch options, 6 basic stitches, 2 one-step buttonhole options and 5 stretch stitches.

Product Features
SWIFTSMART Threading System
No more frustrations when weaving the upper thread through the machine to reach the needle! With this unique one-touch threading system, all you need to do is run the thread from the spool to the needle through one straight thread guide. You can instantly thread the needle by simply pressing a lever.
Free Arm Option
Being able to remove the extension table on an embroidery machine is usually a pipe dream, but this combo machine does just that. By simply sliding the table off the machine base, you have the convenience of working on a free arm sewing machine. This is a great feature when doing delicate decorative work on sleeves or hemming pants, cuffs, curtains, and dresses. It also makes working on smaller sewing projects easier. When you want to switch to embroidering, simply slide the embroidery unit onto the free arm.
Endless Embroidery Hoop
This unique feature allows you to create gorgeous centered, edging, or border designs using the 6.75-inch by 4-inch embroidery hoop included with the machine. As if that’s not enough, you can also take advantage of the multi-hooping capability to create larger or smaller designs and monograms or designs within designs using the 4-inch by 4-inch and 10-inch by 6-inch embroidery hoops also included with the machine.
Adjustable Feed Dogs
This machine offers you the option of raising or lowering the feed dogs, which control the movement of the fabric beneath the needle(s). By adjusting the feed dog control unit on the back side of the free arm, you can raise them for general sewing and lower them beneath the needle plate when working on freehand embroidery and custom monograms or when darning or applying freehand decorative stitches. The generous accessory package includes seven presser feet, including a basic and embroidery foot and a zipper, buttonhole, blind hem, satin stitch and button sewing foot.
Warranties
Purchase of the Singer Futura XL-420 includes a 25-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects, a 5-year warranty on parts and electrical components, and a 1-year warranty on labor and attachments.
Verdict
The versatility and range of features on this heavy-duty workhorse from Singer are impressive. In addition to a wide range of built-in design, font, and stitch options, you can upload additional custom or purchased designs via your computers. The presser foot has a lift range that’s about ¼-inch higher than other similar machines. This alone makes it a great feature for quilters. Three embroidery hoops and the option of using dual needles for special projects are major pluses on any type of machine. Singer did not cut corners when designing or manufacturing this sewing/embroidery machine. You’ll definitely get more than what you pay for if you go for it!
