Review

Industrial sergers are designed for little else than speed, and this model doesn’t disappoint. At a top speed of 6,500 stitches per minute, the Reliable 5400 SO allows you to fly through your work. While there are no bells and whistles on this serger, it does offer an adjustable differential feed, a digitized control panel, a powerful Servo motor and a self-lubricating system.

Stitch Options

Your stitch options are naturally limited with industrial-grade sergers, but in addition to 3- or 4-thread overlock stitches, the Reliable offers you the option of using a ‘mock’ 3-4 thread safety stitch. The maximum stitch length is 3.8 mm and the overedge stitch width is 4.5 mm. The presser foot can be raised to a height of 5.5 mm when working with thicker fabrics or multiple layers.

Product Features

 Direct-drive Servo Motor

The Reliable 5400 SO includes the latest technology in servo motors, which provides superior drive power for lightning fast stitching. The motor also cuts down on the noise and vibration levels most often associated with industrial sergers.

Digital Control Panel

Programming this Reliable model serger is a breeze thanks to the digital control panel on the front of the machine. The panel allows you to quickly and easily program the serger to any speed you require for different projects.

Adjustable Differential Feed

Having an adjustable differential feed makes all the difference when working with multiple types or thickness of fabrics or if you wish to gather fabrics. This Reliable model allows you to make the following adjustments to the feed dogs: gathering stitch ratio is adjustable between I:1.9 and I:2.9 and the stretching stitch ratio is from I:0.8 and I:0.6.

Easy-to-Reach Tension Dials

The tension dials are mounted on the front of the Reliable 5400 SO, which makes it easy to adjust the looper and needle tensions for the ideal stitch.

Automatic Lubrication

Checking the oil level on this serger couldn’t be easier. When the machine is in operation, the oil-window on the top indicates that the automatic lubrication system is working.

Warranties

This machine includes a 1-year limited warranty covering all parts of the serger and motor. Repairs or replacement components must be ordered from the manufacturer. However, if the entire unit needs replacing, a duplicate or a model of greater value will be provided free of charge.

Verdict

The Reliable 5400 SO consistently produces soft, flexible seams, even at high speeds. And it has no trouble handling the lightest to heavier fabrics or multiple layers. The cutting blades are sharp and easily adjusted with the small screwdriver included with the machine. The table is solidly constructed, which provides a stable, secure base for the serger and Servo motor. If your serging skills have advanced to the point that an industrial model is your next step, consider the Reliable 5400 SO. The 96-percent approval rating from owners of this Reliable serger says it all.
