Review

This basic, entry-level sewing machine from Janome isn’t heavy on frills or stitch options, but it’s a great choice for beginners of all ages. It’s compact, lightweight, and allows the new sewist to learn the basics without being confused by an array of computerized options or heavily involved usage steps. The price is reasonable, the speed isn’t scary, and the Janome construction is reliable.

Stitch Options

The Janome 2212 offers you 12 built-in stitch options and a four-step buttonhole option. All of the stitch options are conveniently located on the top right of the machine, clearly printed on a dial. Another dial in the same location allows you to choose or change stitch length from 0mm to 4mm and stitch width up to 5mm. This machine also features the option of adjusting the reverse stitch between 0mm and 2.5mm.

Product Features

Dual Needle Positions

The Janome 2212 includes the innovative feature of allowing you to set the needle in two different positions, which is a great help when changing project plans. Being able to able to make such an adjustment ensures smooth, even stitching on fabrics of all weaves, thicknesses and weights. This feature will also cut the chances of skipped stitches or thread and bobbin jams when working on the sheerest or heaviest fabrics.

Front Loading Bobbin

The Janome 2212 includes a front-loading bobbin that gives you easy access and a push-and-pull bobbin winder that makes threading a breeze. Janome took all the frustrations out of having to slide open the plate to access the bobbin or having to remove the bobbin entirely to wind it.

Automatic Feed Dog

The 5-piece feed dog which automatically moves into the proper position when the machine is being operated gives you more freedom when choosing to do free-motion sewing or on specialty quilting projects. The feed dog unit can be dropped when the 2212 is not in use by removing the built-in accessories container, opening the bobbin door, and accessing the control to drop the feed dog below the surface of the sewing plate.

Warranties

Janome offers a 25-year limited warranty on this model, which includes a 1- year warranty on replacement parts and labor, excluding electrical components. Following the first year of ownership, Janome will continue to replace defective parts free of charge, but labor costs will be assumed by the owner.

Verdict

Janome kept this sewing machine basic, but includes several handy features that make learning to sew a more pleasurable experience. The 12 stitch options are varied enough to allow for experimentation and the buttonholer feature is easy to set up and use. The free arm option and extra high presser foot lift are features than any experienced sewist can appreciate. And being able to adjust the stitch length and width are rarely options on many entry-level machines. Janome did not skimp on quality, great features and affordability with the 2212.
