- Cost: Compared to other Elna machines or similar overlockers by other manufacturers, this overlock machine is budget-friendly, making it an affordable machine for beginners or those on a tight budget.
Cons
- Manual Threading: There’s no doubt one of the biggest challenges with a serger/overlocker is threading multiple threads through loopers and needles, especially for beginners. This machine doesn’t have automatic threading so the user needs to thread everything manually.

Review
From the famous Swiss manufacturer, Elna, the Elnita es4 is a basic 2/3/4 overlocker perfect for anyone learning to use a serger or only has a need for one occasionally. This easy to use machine has simple functions, making it easy for the sewist to quickly learn how to create flawless, professional-looking seams.
Stitch Options
The Elnita es4 offers three different stitch options, depending upon the number of needles and threads used.
2-thread overlock: Using a single needle (either left or right) and only the bottom looper, this stitch is great for finishing the edges of light-weight fabrics.
3-thread overlock: This stitch uses a single needle and 3 threads to quickly finish the edges of medium to heavy-weight fabrics that won’t undergo heavy wear and tear.
4-thread overlock: Utilizing both needles and all 4 threads, the 4-thread overlock stitch is the strongest option on this machine and the most commonly used serger stitch. It’s perfect for constructing durable, flexible seams on knits or woven fabrics.

Product Features
Variable Cutting Width
A set of knives that cut the edge of the fabric(s) when sewing is what sets a serger or overlocker apart from a standard sewing machine. A variable cutting width stitch control allows the user to move the knife position, thus adjusting the size of the loop created, and how much fabric goes under it. The Elnita es4 has a cutting width when using the left needle between 5.3 and 7.3mm; the cutting width when not using the left needle is 3.1 to 5.1mm.
Lay-in Tension Guides
On some overlock machines, it’s necessary to thread your threads through a series of tension dials and hooks, in what may be considered a crazy fashion, when setting the machine up. It’s undoubtedly the most frustrating part of using a serger. The Elnita es4 simplifies the task of manual threading by eliminating the disks and hooks. You simply lay your thread in the appropriate color-coded guide and set the tension, making the process quicker and significantly easier.
Accessories
Included with the purchase of an Elnita es4 are standard accessories: screwdrivers for changing needles and performing other maintenance, needles, a needle threader, tweezers for threading the loopers, spool holders and nets for your thread cones, oil, and a lint brush. When not in use, store all of the accessories in the accessory box and protect your investment with the included dust cover.
Warranties
The Elnita es4 comes with the standard warranty Elna offers on their machines: a 25-year limited warranty on mechanical parts, 5-year coverage on electronic components, and 1-year on any associated labor.

Verdict
The Elnita es4 is a solid, dependable option for anyone in the market for an entry-level overlock machine. Without the fancy bells and whistles found on higher-end models, the es4 is simple to learn on and comes in at a great, budget-friendly price point. Three different stitch options allow the user to tailor the overlock stitch to the needs of the project, creating flawless, finished seams. Without a doubt, this is a respectable overlocker and reasonably priced!

About Amanda S.: Growing up, I was fascinated by watching my mom and grandma turn fabric into beautiful handcrafted items. In my early 20’s, I finally got brave, buying a sewing machine and teaching myself to sew. As I fell in love with sewing, my machine collection expanded, and I ran an Etsy shop sewing children’s clothing for a few years. As a single mom of 3 great kids, my sewing time has lessened, but I still try to find time to work on quilts, bags, and projects with my kids, teaching them what I love.
