Review

For an amazingly low price, Brother managed to load the XM2701 with an impressive range of features. This machine might be compact and lightweight, but it includes a nice selection of built-in stitch options, a free arm function, an impressive accessory package of six different presser feet and automatic needle threading and bobbin winding. The LED light isn’t the brightest, but the stitch quality and ease of use more than make up for that.

Stitch Options

With 27 built-in stitch options, you’re already ahead of the sewing game with this affordable Brother model. In addition to a straight stitch, you can choose a blind hem stitch, several zig-zag stitches, decorative and quilting stitches, shell and scallop stitches, an elastic stitch for inserting elastic or joining fabrics, an elastic overlock stitch for working on stretch knits, and an automatic one-step buttonholer. The stitch length can be adjusted from 0mm to 5mm and stitch width is adjustable between 1mm and 5mm.

Product Features

Automatic Needle Threader

The one-touch needle threading system saves time and effort when preparing to start a project. Just touch the threading lever on the side of the machine and the Brother XM2701 does the work by quickly pushing the thread through the needle.

Stitch Selector Dial

Choosing the stitch you plan to use is easy thanks to the clearly marked stitch dial on the front of the machine. The length and width of each stitch can be selected by using corresponding dials on top of the machine. Being able to select and customize each stitch simplifies the learning process.

Quick-Set Drop-In Bobbin

The XM2701 includes Brother’s Quick Set technology with the top drop-in bobbin feature. It holds the bobbin securely in place which resists thread jams and missed stitches when operating the machine. Brother also included an automatic bobbin winding system that fills the bobbin evenly and quickly.

Built-in Free Arm

Sewing sleeve cuffs, hemming pants or adding decorative top stitching to smaller projects is a breeze with a free arm option. It’s as simple as detaching part of the work area to expose the free arm. The bed easily snaps back on when you’re finished using the free arm.

Automatic Buttonholer

The one-step buttonholer is another feature rarely found on entry-level compact machines. The adjustable buttonhole attachment takes all the guesswork out of this task by allowing you to automatically create the perfect size buttonhole for any size button. Using the button sewing foot quickly and efficiently attaches buttons for you.

Warranties

Brother provides a 25-year warranty on the XM2701 that covers all manufacturer’s defects.

Verdict

The Brother XM2701 is a great sewing machine that includes enough advanced features and functions to impress the most experienced sewist. Brother installed six feed dogs in this machine, which ensures smooth, quiet operation, even at top speed, and consistently clean, secure stitches. The bobbin stays securely seated in its bay and the automatic needle threader erases all frustration. While this machine is not designed for use with heavy fabrics such as denim, it includes enough built-in stitches to make any project a joy to produce. The comprehensive user’s manual and instructional DVD are invaluable to anyone learning to sew.
