Brother Simplicity SB3734T Limited Edition Serger Review

Brother Simplicity SB3734T Limited Edition Serger Review

Pros

  • User Friendly: A simple design without any frills keeps the Brother Simplicity SB3734T easy to use, even for the inexperienced just learning how to use a serger.
  • Cost: Priced fairly for an entry-level serger, this is a reliable machine for the lower price.
  • Tension Guide: Lay-in tension guides make the machine easier to thread, eliminating the need to follow a complicated threading pattern and hook threads into tension dials.

Cons

  • Manual Threading: Threading multiple threads through tension dials, loopers, and needles is a challenge, especially for beginners. This machine doesn’t have automatic threading capabilities, so it requires manual threading by the user.

Review

Brother is known for making dependable, affordable sewing machines and sergers for the home sewing market. The Brother Simplicity SB3734T Limited Edited Serger certainly meets the brand’s high standards. The compact serger provides the sewist with the essential functions to efficiently create quality finished edges without a high price tag. This little workhorse gets the job done time and time again.

Stitch Options

The Brother Simplicity SB3734T Limited Edition Serger offers the user basic stitch options depending on the number and combination of needles and threads used, including:

3-thread overlock: Using a single needle and three threads, this stitch quickly finishes the edges of medium to heavy-weight fabrics. It is best for seams that won’t see heavy use.

4-thread overlock: The most robust option, this stitch utilizes both needles and all four threads, to construct durable, flexible seams on both knits and woven fabrics.

Rolled hem: Sewn with only the right needle, both loopers, and three threads, the fabric folds over slightly before being encased in the looper threads to finish lightweight materials such as chiffon or organza.

Product Features

Compact Size

Sergers are a compact addition to your sewing room since they have a smaller footprint than sewing machines. This Brother model is even slightly smaller than the average serger, so it takes up even less space and stows away easily.

Wide Sewing Table

An attachable sewing table extension expands the workspace to the left of the needle plate, supporting wider, heavier projects such as costume garments and home décor pieces. The extra support keeps fabrics from pulling away from the needles, maintaining straight stitches.

Free Arm

The ability to remove the accessory box and expose the free arm allows the sewist to efficiently work on curved/tubular pieces such as necklines, collars, sleeve cuffs, and pant leg hems.

Cut-Off Bin

A specially designed cut-off bin, also known as a trim trap, attaches to the front of the serger, catching fabric trimmings as you sew to keep your sewing space — as well as your lap — neat and tidy. When the SB3734T is not in use, the cut-off bin serves as a storage slot for the machine’s foot pedal.

LED Light

The LED light illuminates the workspace with a cool-spectrum brightness without generating heat like an incandescent bulb.

Warranties

The Brother Simplicity SB3734T comes with a 25-year limited warranty. Parts, labor, and accompanying accessory items are covered for one year from the original purchase date; electronic components and printed circuit boards (replacement labor excluded) are covered for five years from the original purchase date; the chassis casting is under warranty for 25 years from the original purchase date.

Verdict

Brother’s SB3734T is designed with simplicity in mind, geared towards the beginner sewist or the advanced user who has only an occasional need for serging capabilities. While the stitch options are limited, the machine’s solid construction ensures it provides quality results time and time again, at a fraction of the price of fancier models.

If you’re looking to purchase a simple serger at a budget-friendly price, you can’t go wrong with the Brother Simplicity SB3734T!

Read Our Ultimate Guide On How To Find The Best Serger

About Amanda S.: Growing up, I was fascinated by watching my mom and grandma turn fabric into beautiful handcrafted items. In my early 20’s, I finally got brave, buying a sewing machine and teaching myself to sew. As I fell in love with sewing, my machine collection expanded, and I ran an Etsy shop sewing children’s clothing for a few years. As a single mom of 3 great kids, my sewing time has lessened, but I still try to find time to work on quilts, bags, and projects with my kids, teaching them what I love.
