Review

This well-constructed overlocker from Brother is one of the most popular overlockers in the UK. While it’s a basic mechanical machine, it features a high level of user friendliness, and is a breeze to operate. The noise level can be greatly reduced by inserting an overlocker pad beneath the machine. Other than that, the M343D produces neat, even stitches, thanks in part to the adjustable differential feed. This model easily handles all fabric types and weights, and the bright LED light provides excellent illumination for the work area.

Stitch Options

In addition to 3- or 4- thread overlock stitches, the M343D includes the ability to produce secure, even narrow and rolled hem stitches. With the purchase of optional presser feet, you can also create blind hem, piping, gathered and pin tuck stitches. The stitch length and width for each stitch option can be easily adjusted by simply setting the control dial to your desired selection. You can also produce various lengths of chain-off stitches, which are often used for decorative purposes. The stitch length and width adjustment dial is conveniently located on the right side of the machine. Stitch length can be adjusted between 2.0mm and 4.0mm and stitch width is adjustable from 2.3mm to 7.0mm.

Product Features

F.A.S.T. Lower Looper Threading System

Learning to thread the loopers on an overlocker can be complicated and frustrating for even the most experienced user. Luckily, the Brother M343D features the patented F.A.S.T. lower looper threading system that greatly eases this process. The system is colour-coded and clearly numbered at each threading point. Sliding the lower looper lever to the right moves the threading channel into an easily accessed position. Once the thread is laid in the channel, turning the machine’s handwheel returns the mechanism into its original position.

Adjustable Differential Feed

The Brother M343D includes an adjustable differential feed, which gives you more precise control over any fabric type, weight and multiple layers – from delicate laces to denims. Adjusting the feed changes the speed of the individual or both feed dogs. This option works brilliantly to reduce or eliminate the chance of fabric puckering. The differential feed can be easily adjusted to operate at a ratio of 0.7mm to 2.0mm by simply choosing the proper setting on the control dial.

Retractable Cutting Blade

This option is an advantage when you wish to leave a seam allowance on your sewing projects. Lowering the upper cutting blade beneath the needle plate is as easy as pulling the control lever up and to the right. This safety feature also ensures avoiding any physical contact with the sharp blade.

Free Arm Function

The M343D offers you the option of working on a flatbed surface or making an easy change to a free arm work area. Simply slide off the bed extension when you wish to put a clean, professional finish on pants legs, cuffs, sheer rolled-hem and lettuce-edge sleeves, collars or other small projects and hard-to-reach areas.

Manufacturer’s Guarantees

Purchase of the Brother M343D Overlock Sewing Machine includes a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty that covers mechanical parts, electrical components and labour costs.

Verdict

This lightweight, compact overlock machine from Brother is a wonderful addition to any sewing room. While lacking the automatic features available on more expensive models, the M343D consistently provides you with even, pucker-free stitches on all types of fabrics. In addition to a helpful, informative instructional DVD, this machine includes a step-by-step user manual containing illustrated threading instructions, tension setting tips for a variety of fabrics and the best differential feed settings. The reasonable cost of this overlocker belies its versatility and capabilities. Whether you’re considering expanding your sewing skills or have experience using an overlocker, this sturdy little model is sure to exceed your basic requirements.
