Review
The HC1850 is a lightweight, multi-purpose machine that can complete many tasks that other entry-level machines can’t, including blind hemming, quilting, and decorative top stitching. The buttonholer can produce keyhole, horizontal, secured (for backed fabrics) buttonholes and more. It features an air vent on the right side of the machine that prevents the motor from overheating while working on large or time-consuming projects. This computerized sewing machine is somewhat advanced, but the user guide is comprehensive and easy to understand.
Stitch Options
This machine is impressive in every way, but the stitch options are dazzling. The 130 total stitch options include 12 heirloom stitches, 42 utility and blind hem stitches, 94 decorative stitches, including applique and patching stitches, 14 quilting stitches, and 8 options for the automatic buttonholer. This machine will also sew character and number stitches, although only one font is available. Stitch widths can be adjustable between 0.0mm and 7.0mm and stitch lengths are adjustable between 0.2mm and 5.0mm.

Product Features
Drop Feed System
The drop feed feature on this machine ensures fewer snags by allowing the feed dogs to automatically adjust to different fabrics or to drop them beneath the fabric for free motion stitching. This system makes it easier to handle curves or produce intricate decorative, customized stitching designs.
Automatic Needle Threading
A simple touch of the needle threading control lever quickly feeds the thread through the eye of the needle. This handy feature takes all the guesswork and frustration out of threading needles by hand.
Adjustable Speed Control
When you just start out, it can be daunting to encounter a high-speed setting. At the same time, a setting that’s too low can lead to frustration. Luckily, the Brother HC1850 lets you choose your speed, making it far more comfortable to grow in your skills.
Backlit Operations Panel
The bright LCD operations panel makes choosing a stitch option and settings a breeze. It clearly displays the number of the stitch chosen, which presser foot to use with each stitch, and the stitch length and width settings. The stitch length and width adjustment keys are easily manipulated, as both feature a plus and minus button.
Warranties
Warranties on this model include a 25-year limited manufacturer’s warranty, a 5-year warranty on electrical components, including printed circuit boards but minus labor costs and a 1-year warranty on parts, labor, and accessory replacements.

Verdict
While the Brother HC1850 may seem somewhat intimidating to beginners, both the user’s manual and instructional DVD are very informative and helpful. The free arm capability makes working on sleeves, pants hems and smaller projects easier to manipulate and control. Despite this being a computerized model with many features, Brother still made sure it’s user friendly and reasonably priced. Whether you’re new to sewing or an experienced sewist, this model is worth a look.
