Review
This top-of-the-line Bernette b48 Funlock Serger Coverstitch combo model is a mechanical machine, although color-coding the entire thread paths do make the threading easier to master than other mechanical models. The price is somewhat high for a machine without any bells or whistles, but it offers you an impressive array of stitch options, it’s well built, user friendly and compact. The stitch quality is excellent and the cutting blade is positioned in the machine for maximum safety. While it does tend to be noisy, a serger pad will drastically reduce that problem.
Stitch Options
The b48 Funlock includes a great range of stitch options. It features 23 stitches which include 15 overlock 2-through 5-thread stitches, 4 combination stitches, 3 different coverstitches, and 1 chain stitch that can be used to make decorative trim. The width on the overlock stitches can be adjusted from 3 mm to 7 mm. The stitch widths on the coverstitches are adjustable between 2.8 mm to 5.6 mm and the width on the combo stitches can be widened up to 10 mm. The stitch options also include a chainstitch option, flat stitch, super stretch stitches and a wide rolled hem stitch, which can be adjusted to 1.5 mm.

Product Features
Easy Color-Coded Threading
Learning to thread your new b48 Funlock is a breeze when you follow the color-coded threading paths. Unlike the complicated threading processes associated with other serger models, the threading on this combo serger is very straightforward. Bernette also included a separate looper threading mechanism and needle threader to make the entire setup process easier.
Adjustable Differential Feed
While this great feature has become a given on newer serger models, it’s still not guaranteed on all manual models. Being able to adjust the speed with which the feed dogs move the fabric beneath the needles means the difference between acceptable and perfect ruffles, gathers, and pin tucks. By making other adjustments to the differential feed, you can increase your control over sheer or slippery fabrics such as chiffons and satins.
Large Work Area
With its spacious, brightly lit work area, the Bernette b48 Funlock ensures you have plenty of space for your larger serging projects. No more wrestling with a quilt or bedspread you want to finish with some decorative stitches. The LED light is bright enough to completely illuminate the work surface and the area beneath the needles.
Safety Cutting Blade
User safety was foremost when the cutting blade system was designed. The knife is operated from beneath the surface of the machine’s work area, which ensures cleaner cut edges. The location of the blade controls not only ensures safe handling, it allows you to make fast adjustments using only one hand.
Warranties
The Bernette b48 Funlock includes a 10-year mechanical warranty and a 2-year warranty on the motor and electrical components.
Verdict
Manual operation or not, the Bernette b48 Funlock offers you an impressive 23 stitches, color-coded threading, a cutting blade designed with safety in mind, and a powerful speed of 1,300 stitches per minute. While this is not the least expensive mechanical serger on the market, it’s compact, sturdy, and produces flawless stitches on all types of fabrics. If you’re looking for a well-built workhorse of a serger offering a wealth of stitch options, the Bernette Funlock b48 is definitely worth a test run.
