Review

The compact Bernette b42 Funlock coverstitch-only machine is designed for finishing edges on sewing projects, although the chainstitch option will provide you with some decorative options. The use of 4 threads and 3 needles produces very strong, yet flexible stitches, perfect for those who design and sew active wear, kids’ clothes and swimwear. Because this is a specialized serger, it’s not recommended for beginners. The machine itself is well built, it produces high quality results and the price is reasonable. It’s a sturdy workhorse of a serger.

Stitch Options

The stitch options are purposely limited on this coverstitch-only machine, as it’s designed only to put a professional finish on sewing projects. It includes 3 different coverstitch options and a 2-thread chainstitch. The coverstitch widths are adjustable between 2.8 mm and 5.6 mm. Being able to use up to three needles gives you more leeway when it comes to customizing each stitch option to perfectly fit each project.

Product Features

Color-Coded Threading

Learning to thread the Bernette b42 Funlock is smooth and easy when following the color-coded threading paths. Unlike the complicated threading processes associated with other coverstitch machines, the threading on this model is very straightforward. Threading the separate looper threading mechanism and needles is so easy that both tasks can be accomplished in little more than a minute.

Adjustable Differential Feed

While this great feature has become a given on most new serger models, it’s still not guaranteed on certain mechanical coverstitch machines. Adjusting the speed with which the feed dogs move the fabric beneath the needles allows you to more easily work on smaller, more intricate sewing projects or create perfectly even gathers and ruffles. Additional adjustments to the differential feed will give you more precise control over typically hard to manage fabrics, such as slippery satins and very delicate fabrics or laces.

Large Work Area

The Bernette b42 Funlock is designed to provide you with a generous work area to the right of the needles. The almost 4 inches of space ensures you have plenty of room for manipulating larger sewing projects. No more wrestling with bridal gowns, custom curtains, drapes or quilts. The clear LED light is bright enough to completely illuminate the entire work area – even when the lights are out.

Warranties

The b42 Funlock includes a 10-year warranty on mechanical components and a 2-year warranty on the motor and electrical components.

Verdict

The Bernette b42 Funlock might be lightweight and compact, but it’s a professional-grade machine designed with professional sewists in mind. There are no frills, bells or whistles on this coverstitch machine. It’s designed only to put a clean, gorgeous finish on all types of sewing projects. The results will be obvious on every hem, cuff or seam finished on this machine. The superior results are equally evident on heavy, thin or very stretchy and knit fabrics. Mastering the threading process is largely frustration free and the top speed of 1,300 stitches per minute guarantees fast results. If you’re a serious sewist, this machine just might be a worthwhile investment in your home-based business.
