Review

This lightweight combo machine by Brother offers a wealth of features and built in functions that allow you to create your own customized lettering and embroidery designs with or without using a computer. Purchase includes a generous accessory package that contains 8 assorted presser feet, including standard and specialty feet. The LED light is bright enough to illuminate the work area in dim lighting conditions. In addition to a drop-in bobbin, the Brother SE400 features an easy bobbin winding function that gets you going in no time at all. It offers you smooth, relatively quiet operation, excellent stitch quality and the best of both sewing worlds at an affordable price.

Stitch Options

The Brother SE400 is loaded with 67 stitch options, 5 lettering fonts, 70 built-in designs and a staggering 98 stitch functions. The editing features include the ability to rotate designs and letters, create mirror-images, and increase or decrease the size of monograms and designs.

Choosing one stitch out of 67 options can be somewhat time-consuming, as the touchscreen only displays 6 options at a time. This involves a lot of scrolling.

Product Features

Backlit Touchscreen LCD Display

The bright touchscreen offers you complete access to the sewing and embroidery options built into the machine. It’s easy to learn to operate and includes a stylus for fast navigating through the folders and functions. In addition to choosing and editing a design, lettering font, frame or stitch option, you can adjust or change stitch width and length on the touchscreen, as well as fine tuning the thread tension settings.

One-Touch Automatic Threading

The Brother SE400 saves you time and effort by threading the needle for you. Once you have the machine threaded, the touch of a lever will automatically send the thread through the eye of the needle.

Free Arm Option

This option is a plus on any sewing machine model! By simply sliding off the sleeve surrounding the work area, you can more easily finish seams and hems on shirt and pants cuffs, delicate lingerie, and other smaller sewing projects or hard to reach areas.

Computer Connectivity

Being able to connect to your computer via the USB cable provided with the SE400 makes uploading your own designs, those purchased from iBrother.com or obtained on the internet fast and easy. This is also a handy feature for trying out different colored threads in designs, frames and monograms, as the LCD display screen is black and white.

Warranties

Brother offers you a 25-year warranty on the machine and accessories such as needles and LED bulbs, a 5-year warranty on electrical components and circuit boards, and a 1-year warranty on parts and labor.

Verdict

The Brother SE400 sewing and embroidery machine is another example of why this company is so popular in the sewing world. In addition to being easy enough to use for beginners, this model is sophisticated and versatile enough for more experienced sewists. The stitch speed control allows you to work at your own pace and the embroidery card slot and USB port ensure transferring purchased designs or your own creations is a breeze. The bobbin case may need regular cleaning to keep the sensors working at peak performance, but the Brother SE400 produces quality results and offers an impressive range of features and functions. The benefits of owning this affordable combo machine far outweigh any minor drawbacks.
