Review

The Brother PE550D is a lightweight, embroidery-only machine that’s easy on the wallet but somewhat limited in functions and features. It does, however, include an impressive 125 built-in embroidery design library and includes the option of uploading additional designs via a USB port. The color LCD touchscreen allows you to view each design and font option and make thread color changes or make multiple adjustments to the built-in fonts. Manuals and tutorials are comprehensive and customer support options for this model are varied and generous. The Brother PE550D takes the place of the PE540, featured below, a similar model with fewer features.

Stitch Options

This PE550D includes an impressive 125 built-in embroidery patterns and designs, including 45 licensed Disney designs and 9 different fonts in English and Japanese. Some of the embroidery patterns stored in the machine include floral alphabet letters, exclusive Brother designs, freestanding lace patterns, a variety of borders, frames and character designs. The drop-in bobbin is easy to wind and the clear bobbin case cover allows you to easily monitor thread usage.

Product Features

Automatic Needle Threader

This useful feature saves you time while erasing frustrations often associated with making multiple thread changes, especially when working on more intricate embroidery designs. Simply draw the upper thread through the machine and pass it through the thread guide near the needle. The push of a lever will instantly thread the needle.

LCD Touch Screen

This brightly lit, colored interactive display allows you to make all types of changes to your embroidery designs and font selections. In addition to making color changes on threads, you can also change the color of the design background to perfectly match the fabric you’ll be working on. Working your way though the on-board pattern library is as easy as pushing an arrow-shaped button to the left or right. You can also anchor your design choice anywhere on the embroidery field by using the edit feature. And if you make a mistake with any design or font, simply press the DELETE button to erase that action.

Built-In Memory

The Brother PE550D not only includes enough built-in memory to store its 125 embroidery designs and 9 font options, its capable of storing an additional number of your own custom or purchased embroidery patterns. If the memory is full, you can easily transfer unused designs to a flash drive via the USB port or simply delete them from the machine to free up more storage space. You can only import .pes, .dst and .phc data files onto this machine. Trying to use other types may cause malfunctions.

Warranties

Brother includes a 25-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects, parts, accessories and labor and free online and phone technical support for the life of the embroidery machine.

Verdict

While the size of the embroidery field is limited to 4-inches by 4-inches, the Brother PE550D offers you enough options and features to make it a valuable addition to your sewing room. This well-built machine is both very affordable and user friendly. Needle threading is automatic, which makes changing threads a breeze and the color LCD screen makes choosing and editing fonts and designs a pleasure. The built-in memory and USB port allow you to upload and store additional embroidery designs and this model also includes built-in tutorials you can view on the touchscreen. The design options are varied and colorful and 45 of them are sure to please the Disney lover in your life. This Brother model is a great choice for beginners and more experienced machine embroidery enthusiasts.
