Review

While this model costs more than other entry-level sewing machines in the same class, Janome didn’t skimp on quality of construction of some user-friendly innovations, including the drop-In bobbin system, horizontal top thread delivery feature and the option of setting the thread tension manually or allowing the machine to do it automatically. The clear bobbin cover allows you to monitor thread use and all the control dials are clearly marked. The stitch options are limited compared to other machines, but the choices are varied and useful.

Stitch Options

With 18 built-in stitch options, the Janome Magnolia 7318 allows new and experienced users to expand their creativity. In addition to straight and blind hem stitches, you can choose from 3 types of zig zag options, a 4-step buttonhole stitch, decorative satin, arrowhead, thorn and shell stitches, a knit stitch, stretch overcasting stitch, and a double overedging stitch. These are only a few of the stitch choices available to you. Stitch widths are adjustable from 0mm to 5mm and stitch lengths can be adjusted between 0mm and 4mm. The stitch adjustment dial is located conveniently on the front of the machine.

Product Features

5-piece Feed Dog Unit

This unique system not only gives you more precise control over different fabric types, it allows you the freedom to perform intricate free motion quilting, darning, sewing and decorative stitching. The built-in drop-feed system removes the need to switch plates for different tasks. It’s as easy as pushing the drop feed switch to cause the feed dog system to drop out of sight and use beneath the needle plate.

Easy-to-Read Stitch Options

While the user’s manual doesn’t include suggestions as to which presser foot to use with each stitch option, an illustration of every available stitch is clearly visible on the front of the Magnolia 7318 that makes choosing the right stitch for each job easier. The stitch selection dial on the front of the sewing machine is clearly labeled for easy use.

Free Arm Option

Being able to switch to using the free arm gives you better control when working on sleeves, pants legs and smaller or more intricate projects. Simply remove part of the work area by sliding it to the left and you’re ready to tackle those special projects.

Warranties

The Janome Magnolia 7318 includes a 20-year limited warranty on manufacturer’s defects, a 2-year warranty on electrical components and a 1-year warranty on parts and labor.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a basic sewing machine that’s not computerized but chock full of convenient features, The Janome Magnolia 7318 is a sturdy workhorse of a sewing machine. It might cost more than other entry-level models, but does include a few conveniences. The addition of an extra thread spool pin on this model makes it a breeze to re-thread the bobbin without having to unthread the machine. Another plus is the option to adjust the needle position from center to up to 5 different settings to the left. Automatic features on the Magnolia 7318 may be somewhat limited, but if you’d like to learn sewing from the ground up or just prefer a mechanical model that will serve you for years, it’s definitely worth a look.
