Review

Bernina might have skimped on some features typically found on more expensive serger models, but it didn’t cut any corners on construction quality and solid basic functionality. As a beginner’s serger, this model offers the best of the basics, including 15 built-in stitch options, a sharp, retractable cutting knife, smooth operation with little vibrations and solid, precise stitches, even at top speed. There is also an impressive array of additional accessories designed specifically for this machine.

Stitch Options

Being able to adjust the stitch length and width on your serger allows you a wider range of creative stitch options. With 15 built-in options, the Bernette 44 is a step above other machines in its class. In addition to 2-, 3- and 4-thread wide and narrow overlock stitches, the Bernette 44 can produce three flawless rolled hem stitches, flatlock seam, and decorative stitches and a 4-thread overlock stitch with an integrated safety seam. Stitch length is adjustable from 1 mm to 4 mm wide and 4-thread overlock stitches are adjustable between 3 mm and 7 mm.

Product Features

Adjustable Differential Feed

This important feature isn’t always available in entry-level sergers, but it’s vital for creating perfectly spaced gathers and controlling slick or multiple layers of fabrics. Being able to control the feed dogs ensures smooth, even seams on the stretchiest knitted fabrics or creating the most delicate lettuce edges on sheer fabrics. The differential feed can be adjusted from 0.6 mm to 2 mm.

Easy-to-Reach Controls

All necessary adjustments to stitch lengths can be made with the turn of a dial conveniently located on the right side of the machine, while the differential feed control, cutting width dial, and presser foot adjustment dial are on the left.

Handy Waste Bin

The easily removable waste bin is even with the work area, which makes catching cuttings or threads an efficient process. It can be quickly attached and detached, which makes emptying the container a breeze.

Snap-on Presser Foot

The standard-size presser foot on the Bernette 44 is easily removable and the perfect fit for most serging projects. Its height adjustability enables it to easily allow the finest or thickest fabrics to smoothly glide beneath it without causing puckers. The flat sole keeps one or multiple layers of fabric firmly in contact with the differential feed dogs, ensuring tight, flat seams and flawless rolled hems.

Warranties

This popular Bernina model includes a 5-year warranty on mechanical components, a 2-year warranty on electrical parts and a 1-year warranty on labor.
